Recently, the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has been actively promoting the development of renewable energy, with a particular focus on strengthening solar power generation to address the country’s worsening energy crisis.
According to ZERA’s CEO, Eddington Mazambani, the authority has approved several renewable energy projects, primarily centered on solar power, while also witnessing the rise of wind energy projects. In addition, thermal projects targeting specific users are steadily advancing. This strategic shift aims to counter the ongoing drought in Southern Africa triggered by the El Niño phenomenon and to ensure a diversified energy supply.
The prolonged drought has severely impacted the power generation capacity of Kariba Dam, Zimbabwe's primary source of hydroelectric power, leading to a strained electricity supply. In response, ZERA has expedited project approvals, aiming to enhance grid stability through a series of new energy initiatives while supporting consumers in generating and using their own power. Mazambani noted that consumer-owned projects are developing significantly faster than those connected to the national grid by independent power producers, playing a crucial role in offsetting the power shortages caused by the drought at Kariba Dam.
As it advances its renewable energy strategy, ZERA is also addressing electricity pricing issues. Despite the challenging economic environment, the current tariff structure, based on a World Bank-funded cost study, reflects the actual cost of services and will not be adjusted in the short term. This move by ZERA demonstrates the country’s unwavering commitment to advancing renewable energy development, laying a solid foundation for achieving a sustainable energy supply.
