Indonesia Aims to Achieve Net-zero Emissions Goals by 2060

Indonesia plans to achieve a net-zero emissions target by 2060, and plans to increase its greenhouse gas emission reduction target to 31.89% through the Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document, and to 43.2% with international assistance.

Nicke Widyawati, president and director of Persero, said during a recent COP27 panel discussion in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt: “In terms of emission reduction, We have set a target to reduce our carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to our 2010 baseline.”

Persero has successfully reduced carbon emissions by 7.4 million tons in 2021, a reduction of 29.09% compared to 2010. Reduced non-conventional emissions from own fuel and gas to customers by 69.7% through the use of more efficient equipment included in the Energy Efficiency Program.

To achieve the net-zero emission target, Persero has developed an overall strategy, which is communicated through the two pillars of decarbonization of business activities and development of new green enterprises. In addition, the development of carbon accounting standards approved by national and international regulations, the implementation of internal carbon pricing, and the establishment of sustainable organizations are three factors to promote. This will keep Persero's business on track with the net-zero roadmap and mobilize stakeholders to fully support Indonesia's goal and commitment to achieve net-zero emissions.

This goal is supported by the company's long-term investment strategy. Persero's cumulative capital expenditure on green business plans is estimated to be about US$40 billion by 2060 for the development of biofuels, renewable energy, CCS/CCUS, battery and electric vehicle ecosystems, hydrogen, etc. Persero accelerates green business development through its integrated value chain from upstream to downstream. The company aims to reach a 15% share of the country's electricity market by 2060 by generating 60GW of electricity from Photovoltaic, hydropower, wind power and geothermal power.

Along with its achievements in reducing emissions in 2021, the company has set an ambitious goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2060. “We have the full support of the Indonesian government to help achieve net zero target,” Widyawati said.
